Many refugees arrive in the United States with only a vague idea of when they were born and how old they might be. Upon entry, refugees are usually given January 1st as their birth date. Additionally, many have never celebrated a birthday or received a gift.
All that changes on Sunday, January 26th, when Congregations Beth Shalom, Beth Torah, Ohev Sholom and The Temple, Congregation B’nai Jehudah partner with JVS to host the 2020 Refugee Birthday Party. The Refugee Birthday Party celebrates the children and their families, and helps ease their transition by providing an example of what happens during an American birthday party.
Join our Congregation in wishing Resettled Refugees a Happy First Birthday here in Kansas City. We are asking for donations of gender neutral and culturally diverse gifts for those 0-12 years of age. Suggestions include games, art supplies, blocks, legos, stuffed animals, and sports equipment. If you wrap the donated gift, please include the age for which the gift is appropriate. If the gift is unwrapped, please join CBS and several other organizations at Ohev Sholom for a wrapping party January 23rd at 7 pm. The gifts will then be distributed at Birthday Party for the Resettled Refugees will be Sunday January 26th from 4-6 pm at the Della Lamb Community Center.
