Committees

Our synagogue values member input. While the board appoints some committees, congregants have many opportunities to lend their talents. Contact Jill Goldstein at 913-647-7281 for more information on how you can get involved in a committee.

  • Administrative: Answer phones, assemble mailings and help with other administrative tasks. These committee members are indispensable in assuring that our synagogue operates efficiently.

  • Adult Education: Plan and help execute our robust slate of adult educational programming including the Rabbi’s Lunch & Learn, Sarah Peltzman lecture series, Cantor’s trope class, beginning and intermediate Hebrew class and the adult B’nei Mitzvah program.

  • Budget: Assist with the preparation of Beth Shalom’s annual operating budget to ensure a solid financial future for the synagogue.

  • Cemetery: Help oversee cemetery operations, including policies, rules and regulations and the upkeep of the cemetery property.  Mount Carmel Cemetery is located at 5529 Ditzler Road in Raytown, Missouri.

  • Communications: Help keep the Beth Shalom website updated, write articles for The Scroll and help with our other marketing initiatives.

  • Fundraising: Work on the High Holy Days Appeal and other year-round fundraising activities to benefit the congregation.

  • Chesed: Reach out to those in need at Beth Shalom by delivering holiday gifts to nursing home residents or the homebound at holiday time; visiting congregants in the hospital; following up with members who have lost a loved one. Your efforts will be much appreciated by the recipient and family members.

  • Keruv: Join committee members as we welcome interfaith couples and families to Beth Shalom.

  • Membership: This committee helps to recruit, welcome and involve members in congregational life. Make new members feel welcome  by “adopting” them during their first year of membership; deliver Shabbat welcome boxes to new members; or host a new member in your home for a Shabbat meal or over the High Holidays.

  • Men’s Club: Help plan activities and recruit members to our growing Men's Club.

  • Polsky Religious School: Provide support to the Polsky Religious School by helping set policy, developing the school calendar and planning events. This committee meets monthly.

  • Programming: Plan programs to meet the diverse interests of our members. Help choose topical speakers for Breakfast Club; design exciting social and religious programs for families and adults; assist in launching successful fundraisers.

  • Rose Family Early Childhood Education: Organize educational programs for parents of Jewish children ages 18 months – pre-K. Past programs have included classes for expecting parents and classes for parents and toddlers. Volunteers also help with the annual teacher recognition event, Shabbat L'Mishbacha and preparations for the holidays. This committee meets quarterly.

  • Ritual:  Help set standards for worship, secure Torah readers for services and ensure that lay leaders and congregants are available for minyan. This committee meets bi-monthly.

  • Social Action:  Help plan dynamic programs for those in need. Mitzvah Day, December Outreach and Holiday Adoption all need dedicated volunteers to organize and coordinate these much appreciated outreach programs.

  • Shabbat: Welcome congregants to services on Saturday mornings or join the Kiddush Corps, a dedicated group of volunteers who prepare Kiddush luncheons for the congregation.

  • Youth Commission: Assist and provide support for our thriving youth programs.  The Youth Commission plays an active role with our Kadima and United Synagogue Youth (USY) programs. The Youth Commission meets twice yearly.
